A Cornerstone for Elko

Friday, January 25, 2002 was a fine day in Elko, Nevada ... a bit crisp, perhaps, but a great day for the community.

Friday, January 25, 2002 was the second date set for the placing the cornerstone for their new Regional Airport Terminal Building - the first date having been postponed by the attacks on the World Trade Center towers in New York City.

Friday, January 25, 2002 the Grand Lodge, Free and Accepted Masons of Nevada, having accepted the invitation of the City of Elko, Nevada, proceeded, with all ancient ceremony, to place the cornerstone of that modern edifice.

Friday, January 25, 2002, 50 Masons from all over the state gathered, along with more than 300 residents of the area, to attend to properly placing the cornerstone of this fine edifice.

Friday, January 25, 2002, complete with prayer and ceremony, the Grand Lodge made the deposit of 112 current and ancient artifacts in the cornerstone,

tried the stone with Square, Level and Plumb

and found the stone to be Square, showing the angles of the stone to be true and also showing the actions of those preparing it to be of proper virtue; found the stone to be Level, showing the stone was properly horizontal and that those preparing it had been reminded of their equality; found the stone to be Plumb, showing the stone to be indeed perpendicular to the horizontal, reminding of us of rectitude of conduct.

Friday, January 25, 2002, the cement that binds unites all stone into one solid block, and unites all men into one sacred band of friends and brothers, was spread on that stone in Elko, Nevada,

and the stone was annointed with corn as a symbol of plenty, with wine as a symbol of refreshment and gladness, and with oil as a symbol of peace and joy.

May the community of Elko, Nevada, ever use this facility with those thoughts in mind - virtue, equality and rectitude of conduct, combined with plenty, refreshment and gladness, and peace and joy.

Friday, January 25, 2002, the Masons of the Grand Lodge, Free and Accepted Masons of Nevada rendered Ceremonial Grand Honors to this cornerstone and to its resting place; may they live long and peaceably.

Friday, January 25, 2002, this ceremony, which was begun in prayer, was closed in prayer, and all retired.

If you know of a building either in planning or under construction that would benefit from a proper cornerstone ceremony, please feel free to contact the Grand Secretary with details.
